Have you ever had a long day, got stuck in traffic on the GW bridge, just sat down for dinner, and then have a telemarketer call or, even worse, an answering machine talking at you after you’ve taken your first bite? How annoyed were you? Now, imagine driving down the New Jersey Turnpike in a January snow storm … worried about your loved ones who are negotiating the hill on Route 280… listening to 1010 wins for traffic updates… and then hear your cell phone ring… your heart skips a beat… you answer it… only to have a telemarketer try to sell you vinyl siding for your brick faced home or apartment! That day is coming sooner than you think. As soon as the National Directory of Cell Phones is published, telemarketers across the country will have access to your cell phone number. So during a company meeting, a picnic with the family, a night on the town with your significant other, etc. a telemarketer may give you a ring and tell you about a new credit card offer that will give you cash back on purchases of hamster food. As silly as it sounds, it is a very real possibility and, New Jerseyians, don’t forget its your valuable (and expensive) minutes! So what can you do about it? Well, the federal and state government of NJ have decided to put a stop to the practice of telemarketing calls… if you so choose. (personally, i think you are crazy if ANYONE really wants telemarketers to keep calling). We recommend enrolling in the Do Not Call Registry. To sign up and read more information, for the federal Do Not Call List call 888-382-1222 or visit the Do Not Call website. One month after you enroll, if a telephone marketer calls you at home or on your cell phone, and you do not do business with them already, you can report it! You will be doing yourself and a whole lot of other NJ citizens a huge favor. Consider it your good deed for the day and reward yourself with a small indulgence. You just activated your own federal and state attack dog that will levy fines to that company for disturbing your peace and quiet.
